What personal data we collect and why we collect it

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Our contact forms use the Google reCAPTCHA v3 anti-abuse tool.  Please review Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for any concerns.  We also store all contact form submissions in a data table on the server, for troublshooting and archival purposes (e.g. in case our mail account self-destructs somehow).

Cookies

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics – see below

Who we share your data with

We share no data directly with anyone.  For most users, we don’t even see it, but we may occasionally view and retain data automatically collected by all websites like visitor IP address, referring links, etc. for traffic analytics and security processes.  This information cannot be used to specifically identify individuals without further information which we can not and do not collect.  Use of any content on this site for purposes of spamming or abuse may be used to identify spammers and abusers.  Hostile, threatening, or abusive message submitted through any means may, be used to publicly identify and shame abusers.  Don’t be a dick.

How long we retain your data

There is no public registration process for this site; only authorized users can log in, and nobody else needs to, ever.  For that small group of registered users, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your contact information

Your contact information is only what you submit and may be stored in a database or e-mail box for use in responding.  E-mail to addresses at this domain are handled like e-mail at any other domain.

Additional information

How we protect your data – We don’t collect any data other than through the contact form.  What data you submit there is available to site administrators.

What data breach procedures we have in place – laughing at the idea anyone would bother.

What third parties we receive data from – we use the services of Google Analytics and Statcounter just for site metrics because we like looking at pretty charts and having a fast way to see what content is popular at any given moment, notice spikes concurrent with ongoing events, and things like that.  We also have Facebook and Twitter widgets on most pages of the site.  Those sites have their own privacy policies, and there are any number of tools to sandbox, avoid tracking, etc. including settings in your browser, device, and any accounts you may have with those companies.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data – other than occasionally looking a little closer if we notice an anomaly in traffic, we don’t – and we’re only saying that much because someone, somewhere might consider that “automated.”

Industry regulatory disclosure requirements – Our industry is opposing fascism.  If you’re a fascist you’re not welcome here, but we can’t stop you.  Other than that, we have none.
